Companion Animal Teaching Clinic

• Student-led clinic - students will be the point of contact for the entire visit and will be overseen by faculty veterinarians experienced in general practice care

• CATC’s workflow is distinct from the Veterinary Medical Center to establish a space for students to take on the role of the Veterinarian simulating a general practice setting.

CATC is located on the first floor of the Ben Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center on the University’s St. Paul campus. (Address: 1964 Fitch Ave, St Paul, MN 55108) 

There is limited free parking available in the lot next to the clinic. Once you have parked, come to the CATC clinic front desk for a parking pass. If the parking lot is full, there is paid parking available at the Gortner Parking ramp. 

Your pet’s care will be handled by an experienced and compassionate team of veterinary professionals led by our Senior Veterinary Students in their final year of instruction to be Veterinarians. The Senior Veterinary Students will be your main point of contact for the visit. They are supported by our experienced Faculty Veterinarians, Credentialed Veterinary Technicians and our Customer Care Team. 

As you enter the Companion Animal Teaching Clinic (CATC) you and your pet will be welcomed by our customer service team member at the front desk who will assist with getting your pet registered and then you’ll have a seat in our lobby. 

When it’s your turn, you will be greeted by a senior veterinary student and walked to your exam room. The exam rooms are set up with video equipment and viewing windows, so our Senior Veterinary Students can be coached and mentored by the Faculty Veterinarians in an adjacent room. 

The team will work together to get important information about your pet’s history and reason for visit. Then the Senior Veterinary Student who will be your pet’s Student Veterinarian will perform their physical exam and discuss their initial recommendations. They will then bring your pet to our treatment room and consult with their faculty veterinarian coach to make the best recommendations for diagnostic and treatment options available to your pet. They will then return to the room with your pet and discuss the options for care with you. 

Our students will be practicing spectrum of care medicine. They will provide a range of medically sound diagnostic and treatment options tailored to fit your pet’s needs and your family’s unique circumstances. We use shared decision-making to find the best possible path for your pet’s health, ensuring high-quality care that respects your budget, lifestyle, and goals.

Once you and your Student Veterinarian determine the best course of action, they will work with our Credentialed Veterinary Technicians team to implement the plan, collect any diagnostic samples, dispense any medications and provide information about at home care instructions. They will make a plan for any follow up that is needed and provide a written summary of the visit. They walk you up to the front desk to be checked out.

As a teaching clinic, your visit may take longer than a standard general practice clinic. We appreciate your patience and giving our senior students the opportunity to learn with support in this real-world setting. Plan for about an hour on average with lengths varying depending your type of visit and the services provided.

Veterinary students spend their first three years learning the latest medical knowledge from Faculty Veterinarians. In their Senior year, that training moves into clinic and hospital settings for hands-on experience before they graduate and move into practice.

At CATC, Senior students take on the role of Student Doctor by running appointments, creating medical plans, and performing surgery and dentistry under direct Faculty supervision. This gives them the opportunity to apply their education in a real clinical environment while working with clients to find the best care options for their pets. Throughout, our Faculty Veterinarians ensure every CATC patient receives excellent care.

For all other services, our clinic focuses on spectrum of care medicine tailoring all care plans to be the best option for your pet and your families budget. We will provide a cost estimate for all services for your approval and discuss an array of options working with you to find the best course of action.
